Do you want to learn the whole story of Flaming Chalice International? And/or do you have a congregation that could use a break? The service “My Muzungu Eyes are Improving” is a service packed with funny stories and poignant moments. There are cows. There are lion attacks (but don’t worry, everyone is okay). And there is the story of Rev Fulgence’s imprisonment, the movement to get him out, and the founding of Flaming Chalice International. It’s one of the most touching and inspiring stories of modern UUism, and it’s available to you in an easily downloadable, no-effort zoom service today!
The FCI service is a google folder that holds all of the elements of a service—Chalice lighting/extinguishing, children’s story, hymns, and sermon. It comes with an accompanying pdf that explains how to use it and answers all your questions.
The cost is zero dollars. In an ideal world, you either take a collection for Flaming Chalice International (the collections materials are included with the package), or you make a donation to FCI (there’s information on the pdf for how to do this).
That said, we know times are tight. Every artist involved in the creation of this service agreed that if your congregation isn’t in a position to donate or has other priorities, you are still welcome to use the service with our blessing. It’s an amazing story, and we want to see it shared.

This is above all a humour service—with funny stories of lions and cross cultural misunderstandings. It’s also a service about bravery and Unitarianism overseas—telling the story of Rev Fulgence Ndadigimana’s imprisonment for his work as a UU Minister, how UUs around the world came together to get him released, and the not for profit he founded afterwards. Above all, it’s a story of friendship, and how building relationships with people very different from us enriches us and allows us to make a difference in the world.
The service contains all of the usual parts—four music files, a chalice lighting and extinguishing, a story for all ages (truly ALL ages!), an offering, and of course a sermon. With the “purchase” of the service, you get the right to use all parts and all permissions (yes, the musicians were compensated or donated their work). You can use as many parts as you want, for a true plug and play service, or take a smaller piece and build other things around it—it’s up to you!
How do you “purchase” such an amazing product? Well, you “buy” the service for free, and get a download link to a google drive. You can have a look at the files, and decide if it’s a fit for your congregation. If it is, there are two ways to donate—you can either make a donation from your worship budget for the use of the service, or you can use our offering words and take an offering during the service for the work of Flaming Chalice International.
